Using Gallica

Gallica is the Digital Library of the Bibliothèque nationale de France. It offers unrestricted access to 90 000 volumes as image files, 1200 volumes as text files, 500 sound documents, and 80 000 pictures ( as of 30/04/2006). The service is not very reliable: If a link from EMTO should appear to be broken, please try several times, before reporting it to us.

Accessing Documents

Step 1: Using the link from the EMTO-Database, you reach the 'virtual catalogue card' of the document you require. The number of this 'notice' permits the definite identification of the ressource:

Step 2: Following the link Consulter le document, you get access to the following page. Since documents in Gallica are presented as PDF, please take care that you have installed the necessary software (e.g.the Acrobat Reader) :

Notice shows the virtual catalogue card. Chemin de Fer shows a thumbnail view of 10 pages.
Table des Matieres shows the table of content. Texte seul shows the document.
Pagination shows the pagination of the document. Plein ecran shows a fullscreen-view.
Reproduire allows you to order reproductions from the BNF in various formats.
Step 3: If you want to obtain the complete document within one PDF-file, you must click on Télécharger. Then you see this window:

First, you decide, whether the reproduction of your file starts on the first page of the document or the last page you read. Then you choose the number of pages to be included in the file: either all pages until the end of the document or a number of pages specified by you. Both are counted from your starting point. Finally, you choose the appropriate file format (TIFF or PDF). Then you click on "OK". After a period of time, you see the following window:

Now you can download the file by right-clicking on the link en cliquant ici and using the option "save target as". Alternatively, you can download the file via FTP, using the technical details described in the bottom half of the window. In case you do, be aware of the fact that "aucun" translates into English as "none": This is not the password, but states the fact that no password is required for access. The files produced in this process are kept at the server for two days.
