ESEMP History

The European Society for Early Modern Philosophy e. V. (ESEMP) was founded at 6th november 2004 in Hagen, Germany. It was initiated by the Lehrgebiet Philosophie I of the FernUniversität in Hagen.

Before that, there was no philosophical society understanding the complete period of late scholasticism, renaissance, humanism, reformation, and the early enlightenment as its field of research. Closing this gap, the founding members of the ESEMP have intended to strengthen within academic philosophy the awareness of its history.
